HH: You began the book with an extended sort of meditation on what has happened in Europe. And I thought that was an excellent way to lay out an argument about what happens to societies that abandon a concern for life, and a spirit of religious liberty. Would you expand on what you see has happened in Europe? 

CC: Well, you know, I think many people have written about the diminishing numbers of children in Europe, and in some sense, it’s kind of an unspoken death wish. If people don’t have children, they have no future. And there are very few countries in Europe, if any, where there’s a replacement rate in terms of birth. I mean, there’s some countries who are growing because of immigration from other countries. But you know, our being open to abortion is in some sense, a death wish, because we’re destroying the future that God would give us through children, and that we don’t want to repeat what’s going on in Europe. And there’s many things in Europe to be admired and imitated, but not having children shouldn’t be one of those.

• Europe should be starting to realize they face a serious depopulation problem--and it could have implications for the "clash of civilizations" between Islam and the West:
  Europe is Losing 2 Million People per Year
• In Germany and Austria, the average number of children is 1.4 per woman. In western Europe, the figures for Spain, Portugal, and Greece are even lower. In eastern central Europe, the figures are lowest in the Baltic States, in Hungary, and in Slovenia. The average is higher in France, Ireland, and Scandinavia, on the one hand, and, on the other, in countries and regions with a large Muslim population. This is particularly true of Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, and Turkey, but not Bosnia.
  
  In nineteenth-century Europe, each woman still had 4.5 children. That was nevertheless only half what would have been biologically possible given life expectancy at the time. This is an indication of historical forms of birth control long before the introduction of the contraceptive pill in the late 1960s and the legalization of abortion in the mid-1970s.
  
• "At the same time, Muslims already living on the continent are having three times as many children as their white, European neighbors," the Pew report said
  
• "Given current birthrates, it is not impossible that in 25 years France will have a Muslim majority. The consequences are dynamic: Is it possible that secular France might become an Islamic state?" Ms. Amiel wrote.
• EUROPE is now losing 2 million people per year. Not one of the 47 nations of Europe has replacement fertility; the entire continent averages 1.2 children per woman [UN Population Information Network (POPIN)].
• In 1950, Europe possessed one-fifth of the world’s population, and Africa had only one-tenth of the earth’s people. In 1997, they were equal at 15 percent. By the year 2050, the reversal will be complete: Africa will have one-fifth of the world’s population, and Europe will have only about one-tenth of it. Although black women constitute only 6% of the population, they comprise 36% of the abortion industry’s clientele. Costas: Mark, I know by definition these comparisons are tricky. Era to era, and even discipline to discipline. How do you compare a swimmer to a skater like Eric Heiden or a track star like Carl Lewis or Jesse Owens? And the list is long. But having established that as a preface, A, is Michael the greatest swimmer of all times and B, can he be called the greatest Olympian of all time?

Spitz: I'm interested to hear what Michael has to say actually. I would say, you know, it's hard to compare somebody from one era to the next and one sport to the next. But one thing we definitely all have is this common thread of knowing how to win against our competitors and always maintaining ourself in top form, and Michael has been very successful in doing that. In one way, I think that what Michael did was more difficult than what I had done, because the swim teams now are a lot more diversified, and its harder for the Americans to win the relays. And, so, when Michael inspired, and he definitely inspired the four by one hundred freestyle relay, his other teammates, to do something for themselves as well, and that last leg by Jason Lezak was just remarkable, but it was all because of Michael as a team leader. And I think that he can be called, Michael, the best Olympian of all time. More so, not because of the fact that he's got more gold medals than anybody, but in the way he's handled himself and the way he's actually won, under a tremendous amount of pressure and tremendous amount of things that we would have no idea, except for perhaps myself, just a little iota of knowing what he has gone through. I was going to be trite and say to him and ask him this question: what was the most difficult race and when did you know you had a chance to win seven gold medals?" I don't have to. It was tonight, and it was epic.

• Putin also suggested Moscow and Tehran should have a veto on Western plans for new pipelines to carry oil and natural gas from the Caspian Sea, using routes that would bypass Russian soil and break the Kremlin's monopoly on energy deliveries from the region.
  The main issue before the summit was the Caspian Sea itself.
• Divvying up territory in and around the inland sea - believed to contain the world's third-largest reserves of oil and natural gas- has been a divisive issue among the five nations, and the leaders showed no signs of progress toward resolving the dispute
• Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have expressed interest in building pipelines under the sea, which would allow Central Asian governments to bypass Russian pipelines as they ship their resources to the West. Russia opposes the idea, which would break its monopoly, citing environmental concerns.  The International Tribune

• Moscow strongly opposes U.S.- and European-backed efforts to build pipelines to deliver Central Asian and Caspian oil and gas to the West by bypassing Russia, through which all the region's pipelines now flow. Russia has pushed for new pipelines to cross its territory as well.

• Putin argued that all pipeline projects in the region should require the approval by all five Caspian nations to take effect, a view that would give each capital a veto.

  "Projects which may inflict a serious damage to the Caspian environment can't be and mustn't be implemented without a preliminary discussion by the Caspian five and making a consensus decision in the interests of our common sea," Putin said.

  But the idea was barely mentioned in comments by the leaders of the former Soviet republics of Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, which are striving to balance their relations with Russia, the West and Asia.

   

• Russia and Iran are united in opposition to U.S. plans for building pipelines that draw petroleum and natural gas out of the region without passing through either country.  LA Times

• In addition to the nuclear power plants and business ties, Moscow has a long record of military collaboration with Iran, which relies on Soviet-era and Russian weapons and supplies for its armed forces.
• The Russian president’s visit appeared to underscore the many levels of bilateral ties.
• Mr. Putin said the two countries planned to cooperate on space, aviation and energy issues, and suggested that the tensions with the West over Iran’s nuclear program had provided Russia a unique role. “
• Russia is the only country that is helping Iran to realize its nuclear program in a peaceful way,” he said.  New York Times
